In his artistic practice, Ian Kaler develops interdisciplinary stage and video works. His films are influenced by choreography, and his choreographies by film. The frames of reference and apparatus two disciplines implode, and thematic strands take shape in parallel in the different media.

In a new series of works, Kaler centers storytelling of trans-male experience(s) and collaborations, drawing inspiration from a quote by American trans and AIDS activist Joe Sullivan: “I mean, when people look at me, I want them to think – there's one of those people who reasons, who is a philosopher, who has their own interpretation of happiness,” wrote the then 12-year-old in his diary in the mid-1960s, verbalizing his personal self-empowerment in identifying as a trans man in the mirror of social expectations.

The beginning of Kaler's new series is marked by the video work You are song, to me. Together with artist, poet, and performer Romeo Roxmann Gatt, he states of suspention through movement underwater and the specific qualities of the voice after a voice break induced by testosterone treatment. The film blurs text, voice, and song in an intimate exchange of letters and emails between the two protagonists.  and examines the embodiments and staging of intimacy and belonging.
